La guerra è in corso quando Hugo compie undici anni e il ghetto della città ucraina in cui vive insieme alla madre è diventato un luogo ancora più insicuro. Dalla finestra dell’appartamento dove è rimasto solo con lei – il padre è stato spedito in un campo di lavoro – assiste alle deportazioni di uomini, donne, ragazzini come lui. Osserva quello che gli accade intorno, senza trovare un senso, e impara a non chiedere, ma ad ascoltare il silenzio tra le parole. E sarà proprio questa durissima educazione a permettergli di sopravvivere nell’unico rifugio che la madre, per disperazione, è riuscita a procurargli: lo sgabuzzino di un bordello, dove a occuparsi di lui è una prostituta, Mariana. Nascosto dietro la porta, in perenne attesa che si apra e arrivino un po’ di cibo e di calore umano, Hugo sente quello che un ragazzino non dovrebbe sentire. Ma nelle tenebre giorno dopo giorno si fa largo la luce di Mariana, radiosa pur nelle sue intemperanze e nelle sue improvvise tristezze, focosa, seduttiva, profumata, irresistibilmente bella. Una magnifica, tragica creatura che gli insegna non soltanto i segreti del corpo e i turbamenti dell’amore, ma che cosa significa essere, fino in fondo e nel modo più importante, un uomo.
