L'Anabasi, scritta in terza persona e sotto pseudonimo, narra la spedizione (a cui Senofonte partecipò in posizione di rilievo) dei cosiddetti Diecimila a favore del persiano Ciro contro il fratello Artaserse e la difficile ritirata verso il mar Nero. L'opera è una straordinaria odissea in prosa che anticipa il romanzo d'avventure. L'Anabasi infatti non è altro che un viaggio per via di terra, attraverso tremende peripezie, pericoli, incontri con popoli strani, minacciosi, inquietanti. Ma Senofonte è un Odisseo sui generis: abile in stratagemmi, con il gusto dell'avventura, affascinato da terre remote e sconosciute, è però privo di quell'ansia di conoscenza che ha fatto di Ulisse l'archetipo della cultura occidentale. E paradossalmente l'Anabasi è un viaggio senza ritorno e senza neppure una vera conclusione: la lunga vicenda di Senofonte e dei mercenari superstiti non si conclude con il ritorno a casa, né conosce un punto di approdo definitivo, ma termina come i romanzi salgariani indicando all'orizzonte il profilarsi di nuove battaglie e di altre avventure.
