Vent’anni fa, un’estate in Riviera. Una di quelle estati che segnano la vita per sempre. Elio ha diciassette anni, e per lui sono appena iniziate le vacanze nella splendida villa di famiglia nel Ponente ligure. Figlio di un brillante professore universitario, musicista sensibile, decisamente colto per la sua età, Elio aspetta come ogni anno «l’ospite dell’estate, l’ennesima scocciatura»: uno studente in arrivo da New York per lavorare alla sua tesi di post dottorato.
Ma Oliver, il giovane americano, subito conquista tutti con la sua bellezza e i modi disinvolti, quasi sfacciati. Anche Elio ne è irretito. I due ragazzi condividono conversazioni appassionate su libri e film, discussioni sulle loro comuni origini ebraiche, e poi nuotate mattutine, partite a tennis, corse in bici e passeggiate in paese.
E tra loro nasce un desiderio inesorabile quanto inatteso, fatto di ossessione e paura, di scaltra dissimulazione e slanci ingenui, vissuto fino in fondo, dalla sofferenza all’estasi. La scoperta di quei giorni estivi e sospesi in Riviera e di un’afosa notte romana è quella, irripetibile, di un’intimità totale, assoluta. Ho appena terminato questo libro è sono piacevolmente sorpresa dalle emozioni che l'autore ha saputo trasmettermi col suo libro. La passione che lui descrive, la senti come fosse tua, il desiderio come fosse tuo, la paura, come la stessi provando tu. Un libro dove i luoghi e i sapori hanno una connotazione precisa. Quella piazzetta, sembra la piazzetta sotto casa tua, e quel sapore di bucato appena fatto, sembra quello del bucato appena steso sul tuo balcone. Lode all'autore e alla Guanda per averci fatto vivere belle emozioni
This book is a fucking axe to the heart. But because my heart, perhaps yours, too, was broken long ago, no further damage can be done. I wanted to kill him myself . . . If I didn't kill him, then I'd cripple him for life, so that he'd be with us in a wheelchair . . . If he were in a wheelchair, I would always know where he was, and he'd be easy to find. I would feel superior to him and become his master, now that he was crippled

2022 review: I read this in southern Italy (perfect spot if I ever knew one) and, I must say, it wasn’t as good as I remember it being.
