Nei cinque libri autobiografici pubblicati da Bernhard fra il 1975 e il 1982 ("L'origine", "La cantina", "Il respiro", "Il freddo", "Un bambino"), e qui radunati per la prima volta, il lettore troverà, di là dalle vertiginose architetture linguistico-musicali dei romanzi, di là dalle riflessioni filosonco-maniacali e dalle feroci tirate dell'implacabile "artista dell'iperbole", la narrazione cruda e immediata della sua vita - una narrazione che non risparmia nulla dei dettagli più urtanti ed eloquenti. Come la rete che dondola, sospesa al soffitto di un barcone in un canale di Rotterdam, dove piange il bambino messo al mondo dalla "madre nubile" in Olanda per non dare scandalo nell'Austria provinciale e bigotta. O come i terribili convitti frequentati in Austria e nella "Grande Germania", con sadici e ottusi educatori prima in divisa nazista e poi in abito talare; o, infine, il fetido "trapassatoio", anticamera della morte nel sanatorio, fra tisici in attesa della bara di zinco: quella turba di pazienti intubati e perforati ogni giorno, quella Comunità della Sputacchiera di cui Bernhard diventa membro a pieno titolo. Eppure, nonostante tutto, quel diciottenne dalla volontà caparbia decide di resistere e vivere, tenendo testa - con implacabile dizione - alla malattia del corpo e dello spirito.
