Britt-Marie ha sessantatré anni, un marito che accudisce con dedizione, una vita da casalinga premurosa con l'ossessione per l'ordine e la pulizia. Ma cosa accadrebbe se scoprisse che il tranquillo Kent la tradisce da anni? Lo lascerebbe. E allora eccola qui, Britt-Marie, sessantatré anni, un po' in ansia per il futuro e un po' in preda alla nostalgia per il buon caffè di casa, mentre si registra (come una criminale!) all'ufficio di collocamento. Ora che vive sola, infatti, teme che, se dovesse capitarle qualcosa di brutto, nessuno se ne accorgerebbe. Meglio avere un lavoro allora. Fosse anche in un paesino sperduto, con un campo da calcio chiuso, una scuola chiusa, una farmacia chiusa, un negozio di liquori chiuso, un ambulatorio chiuso, un negozio di alimentari chiuso, un centro affari chiuso e una strada che porta in due direzioni. Abitato da adulti alcolizzati e ragazzini che passano il tempo giocando a calcio in un parcheggio. Britt-Marie atterra come un alieno nella piccola comunità di Borg, ma i suoi modi burberi e formali, la sua mania per la pulizia conquistano subito gli abitanti. Viene addirittura nominata allenatrice della squadra di calcio. E lei si lascia trascinare, in pochi giorni stringe amicizie e fa molte più esperienze di quante ne abbia mai fatte in tutta la sua vita. Così, quando un tragico evento sconvolge la comunità, Britt-Marie capisce che è venuto il suo momento di combattere.
