Carmilla, la prima vampira della storia della letteratura, e il dottor Hesselius - medico e metafisico tedesco -, il primo detective dell'occulto, sono i due principali protagonisti di questa raccolta di storie "gotiche". Un testo chiave, la cui influenza sarà fortissima in tutta la letteratura del Novecento sui fantasmi. Tè verde (1869) è il racconto del reverendo Jennings che, dopo la lettura di "certi volumi antichi, edizioni tedesche di testi in latino medievale", mentre torna a casa con l'omnibus, vede comparire una misteriosa scimmia, che da quel momento in poi, tra improvvise sparizioni e scoraggianti ricomparse, continuerà a seguirlo fissandolo con bramosia maligna. Il giudice Harbottle (1872) è la funesta cronaca della nemesi piombata su Mr Harbottle, uomo malvagio e corrotto. Carmilla (1871-1872), infine, il più famoso dei racconti di Le Fanu, narra le astuzie e i languori della vampira Carmilla. Le storie di questo volume non sono paurose perché fantastiche, bensì paurose perché vere: riflessi del nostro essere, voci della nostra coscienza, proiezioni della nostra angoscia, immagini duplicate del nostro volto inquietante. Le Fanu ci invita a guardare nello specchio del reale con la consapevolezza che quanto vedremo non sarà la verità, ma una sua ombra confusa, il riflesso baluginante di qualcosa che sfugge al controllo della ragione.

A sapphic vampire story published decades before Dracula???? I love classics. This is beautifully written and gay and there's a vampire. Also it's like 100 pages long. What more could you want. Bottom line: And they say the perfect book doesn't exist.
