Daevabad è caduta. Quando va a cercare aiuto nella terra di sua madre, scopre che il suo legame con i marid, i misteriosi elementali dell'acqua, è molto più profondo di quanto credesse, e minaccia non solo il suo rapporto con Nahri, ma anche la sua stessa fede. Mentre la pace diventa sempre più sfuggente e vecchie conoscenze si rifanno vive, Nahri, Ali e Dara comprendono che, per ricostruire il loro mondo, dovranno forse combattere contro chi un tempo amavano, e difendere coloro che in passato hanno ferito.
