Questa frase, tratta dalla prima prefazione alla "Critica della ragion pura", fa intuire la portata rivoluzionaria della prospettiva inaugurata da Immanuel Kant. Il puntiglioso, abitudinario professore di Königsberg, affronta - nel secolo dei Lumi e di Newton l'esigenza di una rifondazione radicale della cultura, muovendo dall'oscura consapevolezza della necessità di far confluire ragione ed esperienza, e arrivando a delimitare nitidamente il raggio d'azione dei vari saperi. Se il metodo della scienza, così fecondo di risultati, alimenta le speranze nel progresso conoscitivo dell'umanità, d'altra parte non è in grado di offrire risposte agli interrogativi più profondi e pressanti, come il problema del libero arbitrio, dell'immortalità dell'anima, di Dio. La "Critica della ragion pura" è il capolavoro filosofico che, più di ogni altro, porta avanti lo spirito e gli ideali dell'Illuminismo: necessario è mostrare i limiti della ragione, perché, credendo di possedere verità assolute, si rischia di cadere nel fanatismo; al contempo, bisogna far valere con forza i diritti della critica razionale, se si vuole evitare che gli uomini siano schiavi di autorità e istituzioni prive di fondamento. "Sapere aude! Abbi il coraggio di servirti della tua propria intelligenza!": l'impulso di questo motto percorre l'intera filosofia di Kant, qui esposta nei suoi principi fondamentali.
