Negli anni Venti a Richmond, un sobborgo di Londra, Virginia Woolf è in cerca dell'ispirazione per il suo nuovo romanzo, assistita amorevolmente dal marito che tenta di domare il suo spirito inquieto. Negli anni Quaranta, a Los Angeles, Laura Brown è una giovane madre di famiglia che cerca nelle pagine di "La signora Dalloway" una via di fuga dalla routine domestica. Negli anni Novanta a New York, Clarissa Vaughn, soprannominata signora Dalloway, esce dal suo appartamento nel Greenwich Village per comprare dei fiori per Richard, un amico poeta che sta combattendo il male del decennio. Tre donne che sembrano non avere nulla in comune, se non il romanzo di Virginia Woolf, e che pure sono unite da un filo sottile che lega le loro storie attraverso luoghi ed epoche diverse.

The film has always put me off reading the book. In particular Nicole Kidman's tawdry depiction of Virginia Woolf as some kind of demented bag lady. I hesitated between 3 and 4 stars for this book. It was beautifully written and has a somewhat unexpected (and yet unsurprising) ending.
