Anche se finì per essere associato agli impressionisti e partecipò persino alle loro mostre collettive, Degas non adottò mai un approccio puramente impressionista. Riflettendo un punto di vista del tutto personale e psicologico, l'opera di Degas enfatizza il paesaggio o si concentra su un dettaglio. Per questo motivo, la sua pittura è spesso analizzata con riferimento alla nascita della fotografia con tempi di posa brevi. Per l'artista, dal punto di vista tematico la natura si era rivelata meno interessante rispetto alla vita e agli abitanti della metropoli moderna. Degas ricercava i suoi motivi principalmente negli ippodromi, al circo, nelle camere da letto o nei saloni del balletto - e le ballerine restarono sempre il suo tema preferito.

A great primer on Degas' style of art and how his work relates/differs from other impressionist artists of his time. I enjoyed reading about Degas' thorough and calculative style of painting.
