Louis Rosen e i suoi soci vendono persone. O, per meglio dire, "simulacri", esseri umani sintetici, veri e propri cloni di personaggi storici come Abramo Lincoln, il presidente degli Stati Uniti più amato e più profondamente segnato da conflitti interiori, e Edwin M. Stanton, il suo ministro della Guerra. L'unico compratore che si presenta loro, però, è un avido multimilionario i cui progetti di utilizzo dei simulacri potrebbero portare a Louis dei seri problemi con la legge. La situazione, inoltre, è complicata dal fatto che qualcuno - o qualcosa - come l'ex presidente potrebbe non avere alcuna intenzione di essere venduto. I due simulacri risultano infatti ostinati e interiormente complessi proprio come coloro di cui sono le perfette repliche. Impossibili da gestire, e a volte più umani di chi li ha costruiti. "L'androide Abramo Lincoln" utilizza il "simulacro" come punto di partenza per una spietata disamina della condizione umana, che culmina nella cupa visione di una vita tanto crudele quanto dominata dalle leggi implacabili dell'inganno e della vana illusione.
