1994. Nella città di Los Angeles una nuova droga, chiamata "Sostanza M", semina follia e devastazione. Nessuno sa cosa contenga, da dove provenga o chi la stia vendendo. Le tenebre spaventose della dipendenza nelle quali dovrà sprofondare prima di trovare ciò che sta disperatamente cercando. Sospeso tra fantapolitica e thriller, gotico e futuristico, "Un oscuro scrutare" è un romanzo di intensa potenza, forse il più personale di Philip Dick, che vi ha trasfuso una carica esistenziale ed emotiva unica.
