Dalla separazione dei genitori, la vita di Izzy è divisa a metà fra casa di sua madre e casa di suo padre. Quello che più la fa sentire divisa non è però il fatto di doversi spostare di settimana in settimana e cambiare continuamente ritmi e stili di vita. Il vero motivo di confusione riguarda la sua identità: il padre infatti ha origini africane, mentre la madre è bianca, e ciò la fa sentire profondamente insicura su chi è e su come definirsi. L'unica certezza che ha è il suo amore per il pianoforte e la volontà di partecipare all'importante concorso a cui l'ha iscritta la sua insegnante. Dato che i genitori lavorano, il fratellastro Darren si offre di accompagnarla in auto fino all'Università di Cincinnati. Durante il tragitto i due ragazzi vengono coinvolti in un episodio drammatico, ma sarà proprio grazie a questo che i tasti bianchi e i tasti neri della vita di Izzy finalmente si mescoleranno e riusciranno a creare un'inaspettata melodia di riconciliazione e di pace. I just read this entire book on my phone in one sitting in a hotel room in Japan while my husband snores next to me. It’s phenomenal. Obviously Sharon Draper is a queen, but this book was all kinds of epic. Emotion jumps off the page, and she mentions my favorite ice cream in the world, Graeters, an Leggi tutto
I really liked how Draper addressed important topics and brought them down to a middle grade level. With that being said, I think there too many important topics to give each one the attention they deserved.
