Dice un proverbio giapponese: se avrai la pazienza di piegare mille gru di carta, il tuo desiderio si avvererà. È una splendida giornata d'estate. Ichiro, che sta per compiere diciotto anni, e il suo amico Hiro si godono una giornata libera dalla mobilitazione per lo sforzo bellico. Una luce abbagliante accompagna l'esplosione della bomba che cambierà le loro vite e il mondo. Feriti e confusi, i due ragazzi attraversano la città devastata alla ricerca della sorellina di Hiro, Keiko, che si trovava all'asilo. Quando dopo ore di disperata ricerca finalmente riescono a trovarla, alla gioia di abbracciarla illesa si sostituisce presto la consapevolezza di non essere in grado di portarla davvero in salvo. Hiro è ferito gravemente e Ichiro capisce che deve cercare aiuto, che da solo non potrà mai farcela. Chiede a Keiko di aspettarlo lì dov'è e in pegno della sua solenne promessa di tornare a prenderla le lascia un origami, una gru di carta. Ma le cose non andranno come sperava...

Didn’t care much for the rushed story, perhaps the meaning got lost both in translation and audiobook. The illustrations in the paperback could have double the effect. An average story that failed to evoke strong feelings for me.
