Cosa sono? Da dove vengono? E, soprattutto, perché sono così tanti? 5 aprile. Vancouver Island, Canada. Leon Anawak fa da guida ai turisti che vogliono osservare le balene nelle acque della British Columbia. Da qualche tempo, però, gli enormi mammiferi marini non si vedono più, come se si fossero «smarriti» da qualche parte. Poi, improvvisamente, riappaiono e si comportano in modo del tutto anomalo, arrivando addirittura ad attaccare la Barrier Queen, un cargo da sessantamila tonnellate. Ed è proprio sullo scafo di quella nave che Leon scopre una gigantesca colonia di mitili... Tre avvenimenti lontani, un unico tratto comune: il mare. Un mondo brulicante di esseri misteriosi, un universo di cui si conosce a malapena la superficie, un enigma che avvolge i sette decimi del nostro pianeta.
