Ispirandosi proprio a Erodoto, lo storico britannico Tom Holland non solo descrive con gusto cinematografico queste battaglie monumentali, ma ricostruisce l'intero panorama sociale e culturale di quel periodo, con particolare attenzione alle differenze tra Est e Ovest: dalla quotidianità nei giardini di Persia al fiorire delle arti nell'Atene della democrazia. Frutto di lunghe ricerche, molte delle quali condotte su fonti orientali mai prima d'ora attentamente considerate, "Fuoco persiano" non perde di vista l'importanza delle forme culturali nel divenire storico, perché, come ricorda Tom Holland citando lo studioso settecentesco Edward Gibbon, la differenza tra Est e Ovest è sempre arbitraria, "e si sposta intorno al globo".
