«Seduto alla scrivania, in un caffè, in un aeroporto o in treno, cerco di ritrovare un avvenimento che non ha importanza, che sia banale, desueto, ma che, nel momento in cui lo ritrovo, scatenerà qualcosa». Georges Perec descrive così il suo progetto di autobiografia: la memoria, sollecitata da un evento qualunque, pesca negli anfratti del suo serbatoio piccoli episodi, frammenti di vita caduti nell’oblio, e l’autore li trascrive, senza commento o altra forma di interpretazione. Riaffiorano alla mente il titolo di una canzone, una trovata pubblicitaria, un nome in passato assidua presenza nelle cronache; piccole cose un tempo frequentate ma poi superate, cose inessenziali, banali ma di forte potere evocativo, capaci di ricreare atmosfere perdute. Il risultato è un lungo elenco di frammenti, 480 microricordi per la precisione, a formare un tessuto connettivo nel quale si può riconoscere un’intera generazione, curiosa di sapere quali tracce il tempo condiviso ha lasciato nella memoria altrui. Il ritmo incantatorio illumina angoli bui e apre nuovi percorsi della memoria del lettore, che Perec invita a compilare la propria lista di microricordi. Tutti possiamo ripetere l’esperienza di questo lavoro. E allora via con i «mi ricordo»: mi ricordo Brigitte Bardot, mi ricordo il Monopoli, mi ricordo l’idrolitina...

This is bizarre but more importantly warm exercise: a series of memories all predicated by, I remember. What emerges are largely historical events and aspects of popular culture. I remember and let me just stop myself right there. It's much too easy to write gag reviews of Perec, to adopt the trick of any particular book and write the review the same way; review A Void without using the letter E, etc. It's precious and clever and just don't. Kind of based on Joe Brainard's famous and great "I Remember' but different in that Perec didn't read that book, but he heard about it from his friend the writer Harry Mathews.
