Calma piatta al Quai des Orfèvres. Sono i primi giorni di gennaio, del resto, e non può essere che così. Anche il commissario prova un po' di malinconia. Tanto più che la signora Maigret non sta bene: i primi acciacchi, le piccole riparazioni obbligate - lo spettro della vecchiaia. E dunque un Maigret tetro e assente ad ascoltare lo sfogo di Xavier Marton, un uomo comune, in apparenza, del tutto simile alle migliaia di commessi che alle sei di sera si precipitano verso il métro. Ma Marton è convinto che la moglie cerchi di avvelenarlo. Imprevedibilmente, la donna si presenta a sua volta da Maigret. Ha classe da vendere, è bella, elegante, e inquieta: il marito soffre di depressione, di manie di persecuzione, e lei teme il peggio. Chi dei due è il folle? O si tratta forse di una coppia diabolica, visto che c'è in ballo un'assicurazione reversibile da dieci milioni di franchi? E che parte ha nella vicenda la sorella di lei, Jenny, il genere di donna che ogni uomo sogna di proteggere e amare? Addio calma piatta. Strana storia, comunque. Confusa e complicata. C'è un movente ma non ancora un delitto. E Maigret ha le mani legate. Tutte le inchieste che ha sin qui condotto gli paiono, d'improvviso, di una semplicità quasi puerile. Non si è mai sentito tanto insicuro. Ha davanti a sé un'inchiesta impossibile: non deve ricostruire un crimine, ma prevedere un comportamento. Forse, più che un commissario di polizia, occorrerebbe uno psichiatra.

Most of the story looks like a Balzac novel rather than a policier, so I see quite a lot of people here getting bored. But the final twist which shows us the mechanism makes all the difference. Once and again, a bright idea is more valuable than fifty pages of small-talk or gun fights...
This is a wonderful story and a great idea. An electric train salesman in a major department store comes to see Maigret, to tell the Chief Inspector that his wife is planning to kill him. I enjoy reading the Maigret mystery series by Georges Simenon . Maigret Has Scruples is the 52nd book in the series. I haven't read the series in order, more as I've found books available for sale, but it doesn't seem to be necessary to read them in sequence. Maigret has Scruples is a different sort o Leggi tutto
A very interesting and intriguing case, a problem for Maigret over a crime that hasn't yet been committed but both parties playing the game and stating their cases and worries. This is amongst my favourites that I have read so far, top quality writing, great plot, charcaters and enough action.
These are very gentle books. The violence, if there is any, almost always takes place offstage. I like that. This one was more of a psychological thriller that most of his other books. Another enjoyable read.
