Sinossi
L'avventura dell'Art Ensemble continua.

When I read a book on music, I hope that it will be informative and insightful. Steinbeck's book about one of the greatest avant-garde jazz groups of all time is both of those things, but it's also very moving. The struggles the five musicians of the Art Ensemble went through were cconsiderable, but Leggi tutto
Excellent document of the group, especially of the early years. Lots of pithy quotes and entertaining stories. The blow-by-blow analyses of three of the recordings are rather exhausting, probably best explored while listening to the music. Footnote: it's pretty amazing that Roscoe Mitchell has ramped Leggi tutto
Review forthcoming in the June issue of Downbeat.
This is a great book about the history and music of the famous Chicago band. It starts with the pre-history of the band, namely the stories of Mitchell, Favors, Jarman, and Lester Bowie, while still before the beginning of the Art Ensemble, the AACM and the first times in Chicago, the first stay in
Great stuff about the most unique Great Black Music group. What is this, who are they?? The first things you thought when listening to their music. And if you saw them live, you got it!! This book details their totally individual & successful working relationships, and offers detailed analysis of on Leggi tutto
Great insight into the personalities and musical philosophies of the members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Devotes entire chapters to "play by play" interpretation of three key documents: A Jackson in Your House, Live at Massey Hall, and a video performance from the 1980s. Consider it a companion vo Leggi tutto
This is a thorough, very inspiring book. There was so much I didn't know, in particular about the way AEC handled their finances and overall business operations- they were visionaries in that realm as well as music. Highly recommended.
Excellent history of The Art Ensemble and its revolutionary musical and social practices. Fortunate to have seen them perform twice.
In 1966 Roscoe Mitchell, Don Moye, Malachi Favors, Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie - The Art ensemble of Chicago emerged out of this social furnace. Jarman, Favours and Mitchell had attended the same Wilson Junior College, in Chicago, at different stages in their musical education. The Music of the AEC, Leggi tutto
