La protagonista di questo romanzo è una ragazza come tante. Sedici anni, figlia di un compositore squattrinato, non conosceremo mai il suo nome, ma capiremo presto quanto si sforzi per trovare una propria identità, nonostante l'opaco destino già tracciato che la lega alle sue coetanee. Siamo nella Londra di inizio Novecento, e lo spazio vitale riservato alle ragazze perbene è rigidamente delimitato dalle mura domestiche. Ma a spezzare una routine quotidiana noiosa e avvilente arriva un invito inaspettato: la ragazza trascorrerà le vacanze di Natale nella dimora di campagna della famiglia Lancing. Per la prima volta potrà viaggiare da sola, per la prima volta assaporerà la libertà. L'atmosfera che si respira a casa Lancing è molto diversa da quella a cui è abituata: profumo di fiori, conversazioni brillanti, lunghe ore di ozio e lauti banchetti allietano le giornate; e poi c'è Rupert Laing, che la stuzzica suscitando in lei dei sentimenti mai provati prima. Una volta tornata a casa, non sarà facile affrontare di nuovo la normalità, soprattutto con la guerra imminente, che porterà con sé le prime amarezze della vita adulta. «Sono contenta: voglio che questa esperienza duri il più possibile. Non mi importa se poi non succede nient'altro. Sarà questo il mio tempo più felice. E poi davvero, è solo l'inizio, ho sedici anni. Voglio tutto, ogni singola cosa».
