Anche quest’anno, come sempre, a Londra si celebra il Mobile Meet, il raduno di tutte le biblioteche itineranti del Paese. E Tundrum non intende mancare a un simile appuntamento. Così, Israel si ritrova a bordo di un traghetto per Liverpool con l’ormai inseparabile compagno di avventure Ted, e il suo cane, alla guida del vecchio bibliobus alla volta della capitale. Ma l’entusiasmo di Israel, che non vede l’ora, finalmente, di incontrare di nuovo la sua fidanzata, Gloria, e di bere un caffè come si deve, è destinato a durare ben poco. Appena arrivati a Londra, infatti, il furgone scompare. Rubato. Ma chi può mai avere interesse a trafugare un Bedford arrugginito, vecchio di trent’anni, pieno di libri? E perché Gloria non si fa sentire né risponde alle telefonate? Ma, soprattutto, chi li aiuterà nelle indagini? Ha inizio, così, un paradossale viaggio nella campagna inglese alla ricerca del bibliobus scomparso, durante il quale Israel incontrerà parenti e amici, colleghi e luoghi di un tempo – Gloria invece è proprio sparita – ma solo per scoprire che tutto è cambiato, che Israel Armstrong non ha più un suo posto dove stare, lì a Londra, e che forse è giunto il momento di tornare a casa... a Tundrum.

These books are marketed as a mystery series. And I guess each one has a little mystery at its core, but really they're more of a hilarious fish-out-of-water series. These books are all about the character--poor hapless Israel Armstrong---and not at all about the supposed mystery. The sequence of events hurtle out of his control and I feel a bemused can't-look-away sympathy for his ineptitude and the intense discrepency between who he thinks he is and who he is. Leggi tutto
