Il problema dell'identità culturale è affrontato in questo libro attraverso la questione della lingua, in particolare della lingua materna: nella sua unicità e insostituibilità, essa non ci appartiene mai. In una sorta di autobiografia intellettuale, Derrida racconta il rapporto con la propria lingua, il francese, come lingua dell'altro, prendendo le distanze sia dallo sradicamento e dalla perdita di memoria legati all'idea di una lingua globale, sia dalla follia della difesa a oltranza delle lingue locali come salvaguardia dell'identità pura di un popolo. Le lingue sono piuttosto il luogo di un'apertura all'altro che impedisce a ogni discorso di farsi totalitario.

I love and miss the way people would struggle to find just the right word in their writing, and the attempt for precision.
