Johannes non parla, ma non è muto. Semplicemente è nato e cresciuto con una madre che per dolore - la morte dei figli durante la guerra - ha rifiutato le parole. Eppure la vita bussa prepotentemente al suo cuore: ha il suono dell'amato pianoforte e l'aspetto di un padre amorevole che comincerà con lui una paziente formazione a contatto con la natura per insegnargli a percepire immagini e impressioni, disegnarle e assegnare a ciascuna un nome. Piano piano il muro del silenzio si incrina fino a sgretolarsi e Johannes è finalmente libero di seguire i propri desideri. Il grande amore per la musica lo porta a Roma per diventare un pianista, ma ben presto capisce che anche il fallimento appartiene alla vita. Una volta tornato in Germania, uno dei suoi vecchi insegnanti lo esorta a confrontarsi con la scrittura e sarà ancora Roma il luogo dove mettersi alla prova e dove scrivere e ripensare alla propria giovinezza, al primo amore, alle amicizie, ai primi successi e alle delusioni... così anche le immagini e le parole disegnate sui suoi quaderni durante l'infanzia diventeranno più nitide e comprensibili.

Eine schöne autofiktionale Erzählung, die mit bewegender Sprache erzählt wird. Die Rahmenhandlung bietet außerdem eine spannende Reflexion über das Schreiben über sich selbst.

Die zwei Sterne gibt es auch nur, weil der Schreibstil doch einigermaßen schön ist und die Geschichte in der Nähe von Köln spielt, wo auch ich großgeworden bin. Die ersten 200 Seiten sind bezaubernd, in der Mitte zieht es sich ein wenig. Man bekommt auf jeden Fall Lust auf Italien!
