Questo di Doris Lessing (Premio Nobel per la Letteratura 2007) è un romanzo che rappresenta una sorta di 'summa' dei suoi temi, dei suoi problemi e delle sue suggestioni. La protagonista, Anna Wulf, non può esimersi dall'analizzare i mille motivi che costituiscono la sua vita, motivi di ordine politico, sociale e anche sessuale. Così gli spunti, i pensieri, gli eventi di cui il libro formicola, si raccolgono in quattro taccuini, di cui quello d'oro rappresenta un po' la quintessenza: e il loro insieme dà luogo a una narrazione distesa e insieme concentrata e intesa, a una panoramica della vita di una donna intensamente partecipe del nostro tempo. E nel libro c'è un po' di tutto: la minaccia atomica, i rifugiati politici nell'Africa Centrale, le barriere razziali, i rapporti dei genitori coi figli, spesso singolarmente conformisti e mancati suicidi, l'industria culturale, i rapporti degli uomini con gli uomini in un'atmosfera di fluttuante omosessualità, i rapporti delle donne con le donne, vagamente ambigui, e specialmente delle donne con gli uomini... e molte altre cose.
