Non sempre le cose sono come sembrano. Un’ottima regola che criminali e poliziotti dovrebbero sempre tenere a mente. Prendete Nora, per esempio. Bella, colta, affascinante. Una donna di successo, abituata a muoversi con disinvoltura negli ambienti più raffinati, a incantare gli uomini con uno sguardo o un gesto. Dietro le apparenze è in realtà un’autentica dark lady, un’assassina spietata, abilissima a svuotare conti bancari e a somministrare un veleno che non lascia tracce. Poi c’è Craig Reynolds, quarantenne bello, simpatico, intraprendente, un agente delle assicurazioni che entra in scena quando l’ennesimo delitto di Nora sembra aver ingannato tutti, persino Elizabeth, sorella del caro estinto, ovvero Connor Brown, fidanzato di Nora. Craig informa Nora che il suo amato le aveva intestato una favolosa assicurazione sulla vita. Ma, per incassarla, si deve passare attraverso il vaglio di un tipo tosto, John O’Hara, uno di quelli che vedono crimini ovunque. Bisogna riesumare il cadavere e accertarsi che Brown sia davvero morto d’infarto. Solo una formalità, in apparenza. Craig sta dalla parte di Nora, naturalmente, forse ne è anche un po’ innamorato. Ma lui sa che lei nasconde dei segreti. Il problema è che anche Nora sa che Craig nasconde qualcosa. Ma, appunto: non sempre le cose sono come sembrano... Sul filo di una tensione che lo ha reso famoso nelle serie dedicate ad Alex Cross e al Women’s Murder Club, James Patterson offre in questo romanzo, abitato da ambigui personaggi sospesi tra fondi neri, terrorismo e ambienti esotici, una delle sue prove migliori.

I picked this book up in the resort library because I had forgotten to pack a quality book. Yes, I finished it, but that was because I didn't have a lot more options. Didn't think I was going to like this much, considering it is for adults and is a crime-thriller type thing. But I did enjoy it! Loved this one! Things are not always what they seem! Nora Sinclair is beautiful, sophisticated and has everything including a career decorating high end homes.
