Uno scrittore, impegnato da anni nella stesura di una biografia di Isaac Newton o, piuttosto, nell'analisi di quella crisi esistenziale che precedette il suo sofferto addio alla scienza, è in cerca della necessaria concentrazione per terminare il suo libro. Con questo intento prende in affitto la foresteria della casa di campagna di un'antica famiglia decaduta. Ma a distrarlo dal lavoro che fino ad allora aveva dato senso alla sua vita è la presenza di due donne destinate a incarnare facce diverse dell'amore. La sensuale Ottilia, disposta a concedersi anima e corpo, e l'aggraziata Carlotta, una bruna dall'eleganza dimessa, sempre assorta in qualche recondito rovello, sono per l'ospite della foresteria un mistero che a poco a poco offusca ogni altro pensiero. Il suo rapporto con le due donne dà vita a un intreccio di relazioni, complesse quanto quelle delle Affinità elettive di Goethe, ma in questo caso spesso basate su un equivoco. Complici una campagna illuminata da una luce pittorica e un'atmosfera fuori dal tempo, lo scrittore finirà per vedere l'arcano laddove vi è solo la più banale delle realtà: «Non stavo inseguendo qualcosa di esotico, ma l'ordinario, il più strano e il più sfuggente tra gli enigmi».

Slim novella. Banville's prose is exquisite as always. Made me realize why I love Banville so much. Need to read all his books some day (this is my third book of his). Beautiful book by one of my favourite authors.
