Quando Ahmed arriva a Bruxelles non sa dove andare; ha quattordici anni ed è solo. Suo padre, con cui è partito dalla Siria per fuggire la guerra, è disperso nel mar Mediterraneo. Ahmed si nasconde perché non vuole finire in un istituto per minori non accompagnati, e vagando riesce a entrare in una cantina che diventa il suo rifugio. Nella casa sopra di lui vive Max, un ragazzo americano che trascorre un anno a Bruxelles con la sua famiglia. Non è bravo a scuola, non ha nessuna voglia di imparare il francese e il Belgio non gli piace. Ahmed e Max sono quasi coetanei, ma le loro esperienze non potrebbero essere più diverse.
