L'Anticristo imperversa ovunque sulla terra assumendo diverse sembianze. Attraverso queste figure allegoriche Joseph Roth stana la presenza del male nella società contemporanea. Un male che si annida tra le pieghe della superstizione, del capitalismo, del comunismo, dell'ignoranza, dell'antisemitismo e perfino della scienza. Protagonista di quest'opera - tra romanzo e saggio filosofico - è il reporter J.R., che lavora per il "Signore delle mille lingue", ambiguo magnate proprietario di tutti i giornali del mondo. Per suo conto egli guida il proprio occhio indagatore attraverso un'Europa dilaniata e decadente - dove il "Dio di Ferro", il dio delle macchine e della guerra, ha sostituito la giustizia divina -, nei luoghi in cui l'Anticristo ha piantato i suoi vessilli: la "Terra rossa", la "Patria delle ombre", il Vaticano, i tetri scenari in cui si riuniscono i leader del pianeta, le oscure miniere di carbone, i ghetti. Un libro denso di lungimiranza storica e dalla sconcertante potenza espressiva scritto da Roth nel 1934, durante il suo esilio parigino, sotto l'incombere della minaccia nazista.
