Stoccolma, 1968. Alla periferia della città, in una vecchia casa in legno a due piani, scoppia un incendio devastante. Il poliziotto Gunvald Larsson, il più antipatico della squadra guidata dal commissario Martin Beck, riesce a salvare eroicamente alcune vite ma non può evitare la morte di quattro persone. Il poliziotto non si trova lì per caso: è lì da ore, a sorvegliare le mosse di un piccolo criminale che abita proprio nell'edificio e che è una delle vittime. Tutti gli indizi, soprattutto i rubinetti del gas aperti, lasciano pensare che l'incendio sia scoppiato in seguito a un gesto disperato dell'uomo. Ma un piccolissimo dispositivo ad orologeria trovato dalla scientifica quando il caso sta ormai per essere archiviato, dimostra che l'incendio è doloso e che il criminale è stato assassinato. Le indagini appurano che appena scoppiato l'incendio qualcuno ha avvertito i vigili del fuoco, ma l'autopompa non è mai arrivata sul posto. Perché?

The Fire Engine That Disappeared is #5 in the Martin Beck series by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, and it’s a good one, a superb police procedural with a side of social commentary. Another one of the top books of the series (yes, it is crowded at that particular top!). This one continues to develop the characters and the mystery is a great one. Just the right amount of the happenings are due to random chance to give that unique feeling of reality.
