Chi mai potrebbe credere alla storia raccontata da Edward Prendick? Stando alle sue memorie, scampato a un naufragio nelle acque del Pacifico, sarebbe stato tratto in salvo da un vascello che trasportava animali esotici, comandato da un capitano dedito all'alcol. Su quel vascello avrebbe conosciuto un tale Montgomery e il suo deforme servitore M'ling, insieme ai quali sarebbe sbarcato su un'isola vulcanica abitata da esseri singolari e spaventosi, a metà tra uomini e bestie. L'unica presenza umana sull'isola sarebbe stata quella del dottor Moreau, uno scienziato specializzato in perversi esperimenti di vivisezione dai quali quelle strane creature avrebbero preso vita. Ma, a quanto racconta Prendick, non tutto sarebbe andato secondo i piani: gli uomini-bestia avrebbero cominciato a maturare una propria coscienza e si sarebbero ribellati al loro creatore. A salvare Prendick da una morte certa quanto atroce, sarebbe stato un battello alla deriva con due cadaveri a bordo, grazie al quale l'uomo avrebbe finalmente ripreso il mare. A Londra, dove è riuscito a tornare, sono in molti a credere che Edward Prendick sia solo un pazzo...
