L'irritante, bisbetico ispettore capo Morse ammira le donne ma ha una certa resistenza a concludere. Una sera qualunque, a un ricevimento, incontra una signora bella e disponibile, dotata di uno spirito e di una grazia seducenti. Nonostante l'attentato alla sua testarda solitudine sia molto promettente, un misto di indolenza e di pessimismo porta l'ispettore a non continuare l'avventura. Ma sei mesi dopo, per una di quelle "ironie della vita" (per citare Thomas Hardy, di cui forse si avverte l'influsso in questa storia così amara), Morse, trovandosi per caso nel quartiere di Jericho a nord di Oxford dove la donna abitava, scopre la sua fine desolata. E proprio così, è un suicidio? L'istinto di investigatore di Morse non può appagarsi con tanta superficialità e comincia un'inchiesta che batte a tappeto tutte le persone e tutte le occasioni legate alla fine di Anne Scott: gli amanti, gli alunni, i colleghi del circolo di lettura, le signore del circolo del bridge, i vicini di casa - quelli maligni, quelli amichevoli e quelli solo indifferenti. Registrando, con stupore crescente per il lettore, quante persone qualunque potrebbero avere un buon movente per uccidere una donna così amabile.
