Cameron McCabe, un personaggio del suo stesso romanzo, è un giovane dipendente di una società di produzione cinematografica londinese che viene incaricato dal produttore di "tagliare", in fase di montaggio, tutte le scene nelle quali appare una giovane attrice in un film che è appena terminato. Come mai? Nessuno gli vuole fornire una spiegazione, e poche ore dopo la ragazza viene trovata morta nell'ufficio di un suo collega, il tecnico degli Effetti Speciali. Esiste, però, una ripresa del delitto poiché in quell'ufficio è sempre in funzione una telecamera. Eppure, nonostante il filmato, il mistero non si chiarisce. Ma questo è solo l'inizio. In un incredibile susseguirsi di colpi di scena, di trovate e apparenti paradossi che frastornano il lettore e lo depistano in continuazione, McCabe si trova a interpretare tutti i ruoli: la vittima e il colpevole, l'investigatore e l'indagato, il vivo e il morto... Pubblicato originariamente nel 1937, il libro, come scrisse nel saggio Bhody Murder l'inglese Julian Symons, uno dei più autorevoli critici di detective novels, è "una splendida, irripetibile scatola cinese... Il romanzo giallo che è la massima espressione del romanzo giallo".

Th guy wrote this when he was 19, and as a refugee from Nazi Germany had only been in Britain a couple of years and yet wrote it in English.
