Questa è la storia dell'occupazione israeliana della Cisgiordania, di Gerusalemme, delle Alture del Golan, della Striscia di Gaza e della Penisola del Sinai a partire dalla schiacciante vittoria di Israele sulle forze congiunte dei suoi vicini Giordania, Siria ed Egitto nella Guerra dei sei giorni del 1967. Dopo essersi appropriato di quelle terre, Israele le sottopose quasi tutte a un governo militare assicurando che avrebbe condotto un'occupazione sinceramente «illuminata». Tuttavia, come è ormai sempre più chiaro agli occhi degli storici, un'occupazione illuminata è una contraddizione in termini; e con il passare del tempo l'occupazione di Israele si è rivelata pesantissima. Il filo rosso di questa intera vicenda storica, che potrebbe essere definito come la vera tragedia del conflitto arabo-israeliano, è l'ampia serie di opportunità per risolvere la situazione, che sono andate perdute.
