Ripensare alle Baccanti significa ripensare alla cultura dell'antica Grecia. Ma quale cultura? Quella della filosofia e della letteratura o quella della gente incolta? Euripide, intellettuale raffinato, rifiuta una visione elitaria del sapere, e crea una tragedia straordinaria, con risvolti profondamente conflittuali rispetto alla tradizione. C'è un dio, Dioniso, che inganna e vince ma senza esiti trionfalistici; c'è un antagonista, Penteo, che viene beffato e fatto a pezzi dalla sua stessa madre: impulsi selvaggi, spettacolarità esasperata, e però anche pietà e sofferenza. L'edizione, curata da Vincenzo Di Benedetto, propone un commento sistematico, che si accompagna a un riesame critico del testo originale e a un'analisi dei moduli scenici.
