La prima edizione italiana delle "Cinquanta novelle" dei fratelli Grimm fu edita dalla Casa editrice Hoepli nel 1897 a cura di Fanny Vanzi Mussini; il testo registrò un immediato successo editoriale e venne ristampato ogni quattro-cinque anni per arrivare, nel 1940, alla decima edizione. Dopo i tragici bombardamenti del 1943, quando la Casa editrice e la Libreia Hoepli vennero distrutte, tra i primi testi ad apparire ci furono le "Nuove novelle" dei fratelli Grimm (1943), nella traduzione curata da Mary Tibaldi Chiesa. Anche le "Nuove novelle" ebbero una nuova fortuna editoriale dopo che, per iniziativa di Gianni Hoepli, nel 1950 uscirono, come pure le "Cinquanta novelle", con le illustrazioni di Vittorio Accornero. Oggi l'editore ha deciso di riunire il meglio dei due libri in un unico volume che raccoglie le novelle più celebri e le più riuscite letterariamente e ne conserva le traduzioni originali.
