Jack Ryan ha fatto mille mestieri e combattuto una lunga guerra contro l'alcol. Finalmente, a quasi quarant'anni, sembra aver trovato la sistemazione ideale, l'ufficiale giudiziario. Ma accettando un incarico apparentemente banale, Jack si trova immerso in una storia più grande di lui. Un certo Mr Perez, che si occupa di individuare società per azioni con utili da capogiro, incarica Ryan di rintracciare Robert Leary jr, sparito senza lasciare tracce e senza mai riscuotere i ricchi dividendi che gli spettavano. A Jack bastano poche ricerche per intravedere il ginepraio nel quale si sta cacciando: Leary è un delinquente psicopatico, e c'è qualcun altro che lo cerca, per saldare vecchi conti ancora aperti. Sarebbe meglio tirarsi indietro e tornare alla vita di sempre, se non fosse per Lee, la moglie di Leary: una bionda alcolizzata che chiede aiuto a Ryan, offrendogli l'occasione per riscattare il suo passato.

I'm a big Leonard fan, Maximum Bob, and Cuba Libre being a couple of my favorites. This one just didn't do it for me. I am going to try and read it again, I have too much respect for Leonard, it has to be me not him.

Unknown Man #89 is told in a dark and gloomy tone. The plot is saturated with the realities of alcoholism. The criminals are patient and brooding and their acts are slow and deliberate. The exposition, the actual meat of the book, fantastic and deep at times, way more than I've been used to the past couple Elmores, the dialogue straight banging, absolute wonderful piece of fiction here. Unknown Man 89 is the 39th book I've read by Elmore Leonard, 40th if you count the bound version of his 10 Rules of Writing. George Pelecanos put Unknown Man in his top 5 Leonard novels in a list I found online. Not sure if it would be that high for me but it is excellent. It's not quite the straight Leggi tutto
