Forte è la tentazione di considerare il libro una autobiografia, appena trasposta in forme narrative, ma sarebbe, a mio giudizio, un errore. Dazai possedeva il genio del grande fotografo. Il suo obiettivo si punta più volte su specifici momenti del passato, ma, grazie alla sua splendida maestria di composizione e di scelta, le sue fotografie non sono di quelle che affollano di solito gli album. Manca in lui ogni traccia del tortuoso annotatore di reminiscenze; tutto è netto, conciso, evocativo. Quando anche le scene de 'Lo squalificato' fossero dalla prima all'ultima puntuale rispecchiamento di episodi dell'esistenza di Dazai - e, s'intende, non è questo il caso - la tecnica dello scrittore conferirebbe comunque all'opera nel suo complesso la qualità di una narrazione originale.
