La scrittrice inglese ci porta per le strade sporche e fetide di una Manchester in tumulto, in cui la sofferenza dei più deboli si mescola all'ignavia dei più ricchi. Mary Barton è da poco rimasta orfana di madre e, dopo che il padre John Barton che ha visto la moglie e il figlio morire di fame, davanti agli occhi indifferenti dei potenti industriali ha perso il lavoro, cerca di racimolare qualche soldo lavorando come sarta. A farle la corte due uomini molto diversi l'uno dall'altro: l'onesto e di umili origini Jem Wilson e Henry Carson, benestante e pieno di sé. La protagonista del romanzo dunque è combattuta tra l'abbandonarsi agli impulsivi dettami del cuore e lo scegliere i più convenienti consigli della ragione. A complicare la sua scelta, il sopraggiungere di una morte improvvisa che scardinerà l'ordine della città e che vedrà impegnati tutti i personaggi della storia, in una lunga quanto sconvolgente caccia "al mostro". I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It offers an important perspective on the rich/poor divide in Victorian Manchester. As brilliant this time as it was the first. This is probably the most exciting and page-turner Victorian books out there, and is highly worth everybody's time.
