La creatura nata dall’audace progetto di un moderno Prometeo è un fratello gotico di Edipo: uccide per vendicarsi dell’indifferenza del suo artefice che, accecato da una folle e smisurata ambizione scientifica, lo ha prima assemblato con membra umane, poi gli ha dato la vita e infine l’ha rinnegato e maledetto per il suo aspetto ripugnante, simbolo del fallimento del proprio ingegno di inventore. Ispirato al mito antichissimo dell’uomo che si fa dio e accende la scintilla della vita, il racconto sostituisce al prodigio la chimica e il galvanismo, e intreccia al plot riflessioni sui temi al centro del dibattito speculativo dell’epoca: l’ambiguità della scienza, la paura della diversità, l’originaria bontà della natura umana, la necessità della bellezza, il mistero delle origini della vita.
