Il mondo di Malazan fu creato dallo stesso Erikson e da Ian Cameron Esslemont nei primi anni ottanta come ambientazione per un eventuale gioco di ruolo, ma in seguito i due decisero di trarne spunto per creare la loro opera colossale. Si tratta in totale di una saga di 10 volumi, con un enorme numero di personaggi. Ciascun libro narra un diverso capitolo delle interminabili guerre legate all'Impero Malazan. Ogni volume narra una storia a sé, anche se le vicende di fondo si snodano nei diversi volumi.

MoI is the third book in the epic series about Malazan. It’s really epic as I haven’t read any such other series with quite long books, so many characters and many plots/subplots.
