Qual è il significato dell'Africa e dell'essere africani? Cos'è la filosofia africana e cosa invece non è? La filosofia è parte dell'"africanismo"? Queste sono alcune delle domande fondamentali poste da "L'invenzione dell'Africa". Valentin Y. Mudimbe dimostra che sono i diversi discorsi a fondare gli universi di pensiero all'interno dei quali le persone concepiscono la propria identità. Gli antropologi e i missionari occidentali hanno dato origine a distorsioni che operano non soltanto sullo sguardo esterno, ma anche su quello degli africani che tentano di comprendere se stessi. Mudimbe si spinge oltre le questioni classiche dell'antropologia o della storia africane. Il libro, scrive, tenta "un'archeologia della gnosi africana intesa come sistema di conoscenza nell'ambito del quale sono sorte, di recente, questioni filosofiche di fondamentale importanza: in primo luogo, la questione relativa alla forma, al contenuto e allo stile del sapere 'africanizzante'; in secondo luogo quella relativa allo status dei sistemi tradizionali di pensiero". Il suo interesse si concentra soprattutto sui processi di trasformazione dei diversi tipi di sapere.

Very heavy and anthropological. A little outdated now too but I can see why it was influential at the time. I can also see the comparisons between this work and Edward Said with African studies and postcolonial studies respectively.
