Perché i vagabondi sono così detestati? Credo che dipenda dalla semplice ragione che non riescono a guadagnarsi da vivere. In pratica, a nessuno importa che un lavoro sia utile o meno, produttivo o da parassita; la sola cosa che conta è che sia redditizio. "Fai i soldi, falli legalmente, e fanne tanti". Il denaro è diventato la grande prova della virtù. Ma i barboni non superano questa prova, ed è per questo che vengono emarginati. Se si potessero guadagnare, mendicando, anche solo dieci sterline a settimana, diventerebbe immediatamente una professione decorosa. Un girovago è soltanto un uomo d'affari che vive, come fanno tanti altri, nella maniera che gli è più comoda. Non ha venduto il proprio onore più di quanto non lo abbia fatto tanta altra gente.
