Dazai nell'antologia di racconti "Otogizoshi" riprende quattro note fiabe giapponesi. L'escrescenza sottratta è la storia di un anziano uomo con un porro sulla guancia destra e del suo bizzarro incontro con degli "oni", dei demoni, che gli cambierà la vita. Il signor Urashima narra di un pescatore, per l'appunto di nome Urashima Taro, che, salvata una tartaruga maltrattata da dei bambini, come ricompensa viene da lei condotto nel palazzo del drago in fondo al mare dove incontra la bella principessa Oro. "Il monte Click-clack" è la vendetta di una lepre su di un dispettoso cane procione il quale ha brutalmente ucciso, facendone una zuppa, la moglie della vecchia coppia che trattava gentilmente il coniglio. "Il passero dalla lingua tagliata" è un racconto sul buon cuore di un anziano e sull'avidità di una donna che arriva persino a recidere la lingua di un povero passero. Lo scrittore rielabora molto liberamente queste fiabe, trasformandole in un intimo e geniale dialogo con il lettore. Un misto di tradizione e modernità che ha fatto affermare a molti critici e autori nipponici che quest'opera, scritta nel corso del secondo conflitto mondiale, sia il lavoro letterariamente più alto di tutta la produzione di Dazai.

What an absolute blast of a book. The exceedingly sarcastic retellings of some of Japan's favourite children's fairy tales. My favourite has to be Urashima-san who rescues a turtle or a tortoise from mean children and the turtle falls in (platonic) love with him and takes him to the Dragon Palace un Leggi tutto
