L'ispettore Rebus è alle soglie della pensione. Ma, appena dieci giorni prima di terminare definitivamente il suo servizio, arriva un ultimo omicidio a movimentare il finale della sua carriera: un poeta dissidente russo viene trovato morto, con un foro di proiettile alla nuca. Parallelamente, in città arriva una delegazione di uomini d'affari e dai piani alti spingono perché il caso venga chiuso nel modo più rapido possibile. A complicare le cose subentra però un altro brutale omicidio, un tecnico del suono letteralmente bruciato vivo. Poco tempo dopo anche Big Ger Cafferty, un tempo re della mala di Edimburgo e vecchia conoscenza di Rebus, viene aggredito. Rebus inizia a intravedere un filo sottilissimo che lega i tre crimini e scende in strada per scoprirlo. Ma qualcuno pensa di sospenderlo, pur di levarselo dai piedi. Come se questo bastasse a tenere Rebus lontano dai guai.
