Al tempo della nascita di Cristo, l’Europa era contrassegnata da uno straordinario contrasto. Da poco unificato sotto la dominazione imperiale di Roma, il Mediterraneo accoglieva una civiltà politicamente evoluta, economicamente avanzata e culturalmente raffinata. Il resto del continente era popolato da agricoltori con un’economia a livello di sussistenza, scarsamente alfabetizzati e organizzati in entità politiche di piccole dimensioni. Mille anni più tardi quel mondo appare completamente cambiato.
