1992. Gabriel vive a Bujumbura, in Burundi, in un quartiere di espatriati. Suo padre è francese, sua madre del Ruanda. Ha una sorella più piccola, Ana, e una banda di amici inseparabili - Gino, Armand, i gemelli - cresciuti insieme a lui nel vicolo: le loro giornate cominciano quando finisce la scuola e viene il momento delle case sugli alberi, dei furti di manghi nei giardini degli altri, delle avventure lungo il fiume, delle chiacchiere sbruffone e sognanti dentro il guscio di camioncino che è il loro quartier generale. Poi i genitori che si separano, le prime elezioni del paese, la guerra civile: Gaby credeva di essere soltanto un bambino e si scopre meticcio, tutsi, francese. Il papà vuole spedire tutti in Europa, la mamma decide di restare, strappata a metà, trasformata per sempre dai lutti più feroci: in un attimo la paura rovescia tutto, invade le vite di tutti, mette fine all'infanzia e costringe ad andarsene, a disperdersi, a perdersi. Passeranno anni prima che Gaby faccia ritorno nel suo piccolo paese, alla ricerca della sua età d'oro, o di quello che ne è rimasto.
