Il libro di Shelley si rifà al "Prometeo incatenato" di Eschilo prendendone però le distanze. Infatti per Shelley è impossibile far riconciliare il Prometeo Difensore dell'umanità con l'Oppressore, Giove, come invece accade nel dramma eschileo. Il suo Prometeo è simile a Satana quanto a coraggio, maestà e ferma opposizione alla forza onnipotente, ma "è un carattere più poetico" poiché esente da ambizione, invidia, vendetta e desiderio di affermazione personale fino a incarnare la più alta perfezione orale e intellettuale. Pavese si dedicò alla traduzione e allo studio di Shelley fin dai tempi del liceo. La sua versione in prosa del "Prometeo" è una testimonianza del suo apprendistato di traduttore e scrittore.

This is the most amazing work of Shelley. This play contains a lot of emotions, and political issues which are still valid even today. Not an easy reading, but definitely worth it.
