La fama e l'influsso del "Frankenstein"; or, the "Modern Prometheus" di Mary W. Shelley sono stati enormi nella storia della letteratura e forse non c'è altra opera della tradizione gotica che sia penetrata più profondamente nell'immaginario collettivo. Né romanzo gotico, né ghost story, né racconto di science-fiction, il Frankenstein è un vero e proprio "conte philosophique" rivestito da tutto l'armamentario gotico caro al gusto del pubblico a cui si rivolgeva la Shelley. Con una trama semplice, complicata però da sofisticati congegni narrativi, secondo il sistema delle scatole cinesi, nel romanzo si racconta la storia della creatura costruita dallo scienziato Victor Frankenstein, convinto assertore del galvanismo, assemblando pezzi di cadavere raccolti nei sepolcri e nei mattatoi. Il mostro non è la creatura ottusa e brutale che la tradizione cinematografica da Karloff in poi ci ha rappresentato, ma un essere sensibile che soffre della inappellabile condanna che l'umanità intera, influenzata unicamente dal suo aspetto, ha pronunciato contro di lui. Al suo creatore, al responsabile della sua infelicità, il mostro rivolge un ultimo e disperato appello ma, scacciato anche da questi, seminerà intorno a lui morte e distruzione.
