La filosofia di Spinoza è uno dei tentativi più radicali di costituire un'ontologia pura: una sola sostanza per tutti gli attributi, infiniti modi di essere per ciascun attributo. Ma, sostiene Deleuze, questo complesso edificio filosofico non è riducibile a un programma teorico: occorre "entrare dentro Spinoza", cogliendo la Sostanza come un piano d'immanenza in cui si trovano anime, corpi, individualità, senza alcuna dimensione teorica trascendente. Da questa ontologia deriva un'etica intesa come scienza pratica dei modi di essere, studio dei "costumi" e dunque vera e propria etologia. L'Etica della prova e della sperimentazione, che si oppone a una Morale delle leggi e dei giudizi, costituisce il tema di questo libro. Scrittori, poeti, musicisti, artisti o gli stessi lettori occasionali potranno qui scoprirsi spinoziani ancor più del filosofo professionista. Le pagine di Deleuze dimostrano infatti che in Spinoza vi è anche un impulso segreto, un brivido di stupore che rende possibile una "lettura affettiva" dei suoi testi, insegnando al filosofo a divenire non filosofo e, a tutti, a seguire quelle passioni e quei "costumi" che la filosofia suscita.
