Un amore intenso e appassionato, ma infelice, ispirò a Stendhal quest’opera. Dell’amore, pubblicato nel 1822, è il frutto di quell’esperienza dolorosa. Che cos’è questo sentimento, si domanda Stendhal, che può tormentare, trasformare, travolgere? Può l’uomo, così spesso schiacciato da questa tirannica forza, chiamarla a un confronto diretto che ne metta a nudo l’essere e le forme, l’agire e le leggi? Una vocazione prevalentemente conoscitiva connota il progetto stendhaliano di una fisiologia dell’amore fuori dalla retorica e dalle idealizzazioni correnti. Ne risulta una sorta di saggio romanzato in cui l’intento analitico si misura con il dato autobiografico e la passionalità dell’autore: «Voglio imporre il silenzio al mio cuore. Ho sempre paura di non aver scritto altro che un sospiro mentre credevo di aver colto una verità».
